Bernie Moreno, a blockchain entrepreneur, has flipped the seat in Ohio from blue to red, beating out the Democrat Sherrod Brown – marking a major win for the Republicans and for crypto.

The result came as a major blow to the Democrats who had hopes of retaining control of the US Senate, with Brown having represented Ohio for almost two decades.

Moreno, who was born in Colombia and moved to the United States aged five, has thanked those who voted: “I am so grateful to Ohioans for their resounding support in this race.

“I look forward to working with the new Republican Senate majority to fix our economy, secure our border, and return to American strength at home and abroad.”

This result shows a significant shift in the Midwestern state as this was once a prime state for Democrats. Since then, the area is said to have become more conservative.

Ohio winner Bernie Moreno represents a huge win for crypto

While the Republican party has seemingly come out on top in the 2024 US Election, the cryptocurrency industry is sure to feel a boost as Moreno is a long-time supporter.

Around $40 million of crypto money was said to be directed at defeating the Democrat in Ohio, with this state being one of the most expensive Senate races this year.

Sherrod Brown was unpopular with crypto voters as he voted against pro-crypto legislation and called for more regulation of the sector.

On the other hand, Moreno has been publicly outspoken about his support for the industry and it’s one he has been interested in for some time. In 2019, he sold some of his car dealerships to fund a blockchain startup called Ownum.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong took to X to share the news of the Moreno win, writing: “Being anti-crypto is simply bad politics.”

He went on to say how the Republican “understands that crypto is an important part of America’s future. Bernie and the crypto owners who helped him secure this win understand how everyone can benefit from crypto and are willing to fight for it. Welcome to America’s most pro-crypto Congress ever @berniemoreno.”
